Finding the Perfect Pillow for Shoulder Pain Can Help with Sleep

Back to Home
If you suffer from shoulder pain, it’s likely that your sleep is affected.  One of the simplest things you can do to help remedy the situation is finding the correct size sleeping pillow for shoulder pain.

Importance of Sleep

Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our health and wellbeing.  Lack of sleep can contribute to everything from depression to heart disease.  It can cause us to be irritable, lower our cognitive function and weaken our immune systems. How much sleep you need can depend on many factors such as age, medical conditions and personal circumstances, however it is generally recommended that healthy adults should have between seven and eight hours of sleep a night.  According to CNN, there are eight factors that can keep you awake at night: stress, snoring, jet lag, shift work, hormonal changes, medical illness, medications and pain.  One of the most common sources of pain that can keep us awake at night is shoulder pain.

Shoulder Pain

There are three bones in your shoulder: the upper arm bone, the shoulder blade and the collarbone.  The upper arm bone fits into a rounded socket in the shoulder blade, with muscles and tendons keeping it in place.

The most common shoulder problems are caused by arthritis, fractures, tendon strains/tears, or instability.  Instability in the shoulder is when the upper arm bone is displaced out of the shoulder socket.  This can happen during an injury or through misuse.  Shoulder pain can also be a result of bursitis or tendinitis.  What ever is the cause of your shoulder pain, it’s important to have a proper-fitting pillow so you can have a comfortable, rejuvenating sleep, waking refreshed in the morning.

Selecting the Right Pillow for Shoulder Pain

A proper-fitting pillow can help reduce or eliminate shoulder pain. It can also help diminish any tingling or numbness in the arm or hand.  The correct size sleeping pillow can also help reduce neck and back pain.

When looking for a sleeping pillow, look for one that fits the natural curve of your neck, keeping your spine aligned.  The pillow should minimalize pressure on the shoulder, reducing blood flow to the area, helping the muscles to relax.  This is especially important if you are someone who sleeps on your side.  The filling in the pillow should be supportive or the shoulder can start to turn in, putting pressure on the nerves in the neck.  This can inflame the muscles in the neck, causing further pain.

Look for a pillow that is termed therapeutic, preferably one that has been proven to work in clinical trials. Beware of pillows that only come in one size. They should rather come in various sizes to suit your body shape.  Consider whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach.  Older pillows can lose their support.  They can also become mouldy, collecting skin cells, dust mites, fungus and mildew, so plan on replacing your pillow every few years, preferably with one that is machine washable. Some therapeutic pillows may be covered by medical insurance plans.

Getting a comfortable, restful, rejuvenating sleep is important for our health and wellbeing.  Finding the right pillow for shoulder pain can help you reach that goal.
